The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced on May 20 that Angel Emilio Rodriguez-Marroquin, an illegal alien from Guatemala, was sentenced to 600 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to producing and possessing child sexual abuse material involving his own 8-year-old nephew and niece with special needs.

The case highlights ongoing concerns about crimes committed by individuals released after entering the United States illegally. According to a Department of Homeland Security release, Rodriguez-Marroquin was arrested by ICE Homeland Security Investigations Los Angeles on November 22, 2025, and later sentenced on May 18 for production and possession of child pornography. The material included footage of him assaulting his young relatives. After serving his sentence, Rodriguez-Marroquin will be removed from the country, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

California’s failure to honor ICE detainers has resulted in the release of 4,561 criminal illegal aliens since January 20. The crimes associated with these released individuals included homicides, assaults, burglaries, robberies, dangerous drugs offenses, weapons offenses, and sexual predatory offenses. There are currently 33,179 aliens in California jurisdiction custody with active detainers, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

During the first 100 days of the current administration, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested over 66,000 illegal aliens and removed more than 65,000 individuals from the country. Three out of four arrests were criminal illegal aliens; among those targeted were gang members as well as individuals accused or convicted of sex offenses and murder, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The Department of Homeland Security was established in 2002 by combining multiple federal departments into a unified Cabinet agency focused on securing the nation through immigration enforcement and public safety operations. The department employs more than 260,000 people working to safeguard Americans from various threats with honor and integrity, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
